The Environment
Hendel-Blackford Fine Furniture is keen to protect the world's natural resources. As a result we only obtain timber from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved timber merchants. We are particularly keen to avoid using tropical hardwoods as these are often sourced from particularly vulnerable ecosystems which can take centuries, if not millenia, to repair themselves. In order to limit our carbon footprint we try to use predominantly local (Devon), or at least native (British) timbers for all of our pieces. Not only are British woods some of the most beautiful to work, it gives our furniture that bit more "heritage".
When we visit clients in other parts of the country we try to travel by train wherever possible. Furthermore we try to keep our waste down at our shared workshops by using our wood offcuts for fuel and by ordering sundries together or in bulk.
Finally, for every piece of furniture commissioned from us we provide our clients with a tree sapling to plant in their gardens (preferably the type of tree that was used in the commission). If the client does not have a garden we will plant a tree on their behalf.
